Injection moulding is a popular manufacturing process used for creating a wide range of components made from plastics. The selection of the right material is crucial for the success of the project. The material you choose can impact factors such as strength, durability, flexibility, and cost. If you are unsure on the plastic for your injection mouldings, Moldwel can provide a wide range of bespoke services tailored to your needs.

In this article, we explore some of the most common plastics you could use in injection moulding, including their properties and applications. Polypropylene, Polyamide – Nylon, Polycarbonate, and Acrylonitrile Butadeine Styrene are just a few examples.

Choosing the right material plastics for your injection moulding project depends on several factors, including:

The Application:

The first consideration when choosing a plastic for injection moulding is the intended application of the part. You should select the material based on the part’s required properties, such as:

strength,

durability,

flexibility,

heat resistance,

or chemical resistance.

Production Volume:

What you expect the production volume is going to be is also an important consideration. Some materials are better suited for high-volume production runs, whereas others may be more appropriate for low-volume production.

Cost:

The cost of the material is another important factor. Some materials are more expensive than others. Therefore, this can affect the overall cost of the production process.

Processing Conditions:

Different materials require different processing conditions. For example, some materials may require a higher melting temperature or longer cooling time than others. It is important to choose a material that can be processed efficiently and cost-effectively.

Environmental Factors:

Environmental factors such as exposure to UV light, moisture, and chemicals can also affect the choice of material. For instance, some materials may be better suited for outdoor use, while others may be more appropriate for indoor use.

Regulatory Requirements:

Depending on the application, there may be regulatory requirements that dictate the choice of material. For example, materials used in medical devices must meet certain safety standards, while materials used in food packaging must be food safe.

Choose the Right Material

Thermoplastic injection moulding is a widely in use for manufacturing parts and components for a range of industries. In the process of injection moulding, thermoplastics are liquified by being heated up in the barrel of the moulding machine. After that, the plastic is cooled and solidified inside the moulding tool. However, depending on the plastic you choose can impact different elements of the production process. Consequently, it is vital you choose the correct one for you application.

What plastic should be used in injection moulding?

Are you not sure of the best plastic to use for your bespoke project? Let’s take a closer look at some of the most commonly used plastics in injection moulding.

Polypropylene (PP)

Polypropylene (PP) is a cost-effective polymer with a high melting point, excellent impact strength, good resistance to stress and cracking, and good resistance to water, acids, and detergent. It is widely used in a variety of household goods, including First Aid Boxes and Weaving Bobbins for the textiles industry.

Polyamide – Nylon (PA)

Polyamide – Nylon (PA) is a tough, strong material with a high level of stability and is resistant to abrasion, impact, and chemicals. It is commonly found in the products used in the automotive and medical sectors and is extensively used in producing engineering parts used in the lock making industry, as well as internal parts in window and door manufacture.

Polycarbonate (PC)

Polycarbonate (PC) is a naturally transparent, amorphous thermoplastic primarily used when impact resistance and good transparency are needed. Unlike many other thermoplastic polymers, PC can undergo large plastic deformations without cracking or breaking. It is commonly used in the manufacture of DVD disks and medical devices and is also used in the production of lighting diffusers and covers.

Acrylonitrile Butadeine Styrene (ABS)

Acrylonitrile Butadeine Styrene (ABS) is an opaque thermoplastic and amorphous polymer composed of three distinct monomers – Acrylonitrile, Butadeine, and Styrene. Together they create a polymer that is light in weight, flexible, and easily mouldable. ABS has good impact resistance, heat resistance, and toughness and is found in a wide variety of everyday items, including drain pipe systems, miscellaneous kitchen items, and even Lego bricks.

Manufacturers in the UK Plastic Industry

The plastics industry in the UK has come a long way since its early days in the 1960s. Today, manufacturers in the UK use plastic in a wide range of products. Therefore, making modern life as we know it impossible without them.

Importance and Size of the Industry

The plastic product manufacturing industry has grown significantly over the years. It is now considered one of the most important sectors in the UK. It employs roughly 500,000 people, directly and indirectly, and also comprises 5,800 companies. Consequently, making it the second largest employer in the UK manufacturing sector and one of the top 10 exports in the UK.

The Need for Skilled Workers

The industry processes 3.3 million tonnes of plastic materials and produces 1.6 million tonnes. Despite being one of the highest producing industries across Europe, British plastics manufacturing is still suffering from a lack of skills and recognition. To cope with the fast growth of the industry, more young people need to be trained in plastics manufacturing and development.

Actions are being taken to invest in young people interested in the plastics industry. This is done by amending the UK curriculum to offer potential training and early skills. Organisations are also being encouraged to get involved in teaching, work placements and apprenticeships. As a result, this will help nurture those interested in a career in this fast-growing industry.

Sustainability Concerns

One major concern about plastics is the effect they have on the environment. The plastics industry is hard at work to ensure that the growing use and development of plastics is sustainable. The British Plastics Federation is putting pressure to ban the landfill of all recyclable and recoverable waste that could be recycled. The Plastics Industry Recycling Action Plan is being developed to decide the most efficient and environmentally friendly method of dealing with plastics waste.

History of Plastic Injection Moulding

Development of the Manufacturing Process

Plastic injection moulding is a manufacturing process that has been in use for over a century. It was first developed in the late 1800s as a way to manufacture small objects, such as buttons and hair combs. However, it was not until the 1940s that the process began to be used on a large scale to produce a wide range of products.

Key Developments

One of the key developments that led to the widespread use of plastic injection moulding was the invention of new types of plastics. The 1950s and 1960s saw the introduction of a range of new plastics, including polyethylene and polypropylene. These new materials were lightweight, strong, and versatile, making them ideal for use in a wide range of products.

Current Use of Plastic Injection Moulding

The use of plastic injection moulding continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as new technologies and materials were developed. Today, plastic injection moulding is used to manufacture everything from medical devices and automotive parts to toys and household appliances.

Benefits of Plastic Injection Moulding

Despite these challenges, plastic injection moulding is becoming a popular manufacturing process, as it is efficient and resourceful. It allows for only the necessary amount of plastic to be used, and excess plastic can be recycled.

Furthermore, plastic injection moulding is also seen to be accurate due to its precise method and process, and it is also fast.

It can produce a wide range of plastic components for various industries. However, the process would not be possible without the plastic injection moulding machine. In this blog, we will explore the different parts of the machine and the machinery available at Moldwel.

The Parts of a Plastic Injection Moulding Machine

The plastic injection moulding machine is made up of four main parts: the platen, hopper, barrel, and injection unit with a nozzle.

The Platen

The platen holds the injection moulding tool, which forms the actual component.

The Hopper

The hopper is where the plastic granules are poured or loaded in their granular or solid form at the very beginning of the process.

The Barrel

The hopper sits on top of the barrel, where the granules are heated up into a liquid form.

The Injection Unit and Nozzle

Once heated up, the liquefied granules are injected through the nozzle into the mould tool and into the cavity to form the component shape. The liquefied granules are held and cooled in the cavity until solid before being ejected out.

Injection moulding and vacuum forming are the two most popular, and commonly used processes, in plastic manufacturing. When it comes to a plastic manufacturing process, the process needs to be quick, reliable, and efficient. In addition to this, you need to be able to rely on the process to produce consistent, quality plastic products every time. Here at Moldwel, we are proud to be a plastic moulding manufacturer based in the UK. As experts in plastic injection moulding services, we can help you decide between the two popular manufacturing processes.

Injection Moulding & Vacuum Forming: The Basics – What are they?

What is Vacuum Forming?

Vacuum forming, sometimes also referred to as Thermoforming is a process where plastic sheets are heated in automated forming equipment until soft and malleable. Once soft, it is then “formed” around a shape or mould. A vacuum source is then turned on to suck the plastic sheet to the mould shape. When the formed sheet of plastic has cooled sufficiently, the excess sheet is trimmed off to give the final, finished component.

What is Injection Moulding?

Plastic injection moulding is a far more complex, detailed process. The plastic used in this comes in a granule form which is then heated in a barrel until it becomes plasticised. This is then injected from the barrel into the injection mould tools. Once cooled, the finish component in its solid form is ejected from the tool using special ejector pins.

What are the advantages?

Advantages of Vacuum Forming

Vacuum forming has shorter lead times on new tooling.

Much lower tooling start up costs.

This method has the ability to create larger plastic parts.

Relatively low costs for smaller batch requirements.

Advantages of Plastic Injection Moulding

A wide variety of different materials, with different mechanical properties can be used.

Parts can be made from any colour required.

Inserts can be used within the moulding process.

Closer tolerances and more intricacy within the design is possible.

Far more cost effective on large run / repeat orders.

Very little waste / scrap is produced – this can be reground and re-used.

What are the disadvantages?

Disadvantages of Vacuum Forming

Consistency in wall thickness / uniformity of plastic products is not always achievable.

Limited in the detail and complexity of parts.

This method is not cost effective on larger batch runs.

Additional time and cost involved in the finishing process.

Disadvantages of Plastic Injection Moulding

Higher initial start up costs because of the tooling needed.

More skill, knowledge and experience is required.

Initial tooling manufacture has a longer lead time.

There has been a long line of success and indeed sustained growth within the plastics industry over the last 30 years or so. This is because injection moulded plastics are often the replacement for metal components.

At first there was a great reluctance to change; the majority of designers and engineers had only ever worked with metal and initially were unsure about changing. However, steel prices are ever-increasing and coupled with longer lead times, steel was proving less beneficial to manufacture with.

Plastic is more versatile, easier and cheaper to source, quicker to work with, and can produce more ROI than steel if used in appropriate applications. Injection moulded plastics are almost guaranteed to be the most cost-effective option.

What is Plastic Injection Moulding?

Plastic injection moulding is a manufacturing process that is used to create high volume batches of plastic parts. Plastic pellets – usually thermoplastic polymers – are melted into a liquid to begin with. They are then injected at a high pressure into a mould cavity. The mould is filled and the plastic then solidifies inside of it. The plastic can be popped out and the result will be a specific plastic part once cooled and hardened.

The moulds are made in the required part’s shape and size, and then can be used over and over to create accurate and consistent batches of the same product fact and efficiently. It is typically a mass-production process where the same part needs to be created hundreds, thousands, millions of times.

Injection Moulded Plastics

The main advantage of plastic injection moulding is the short time frame. Due to the mould being the same, you’re always guaranteed to get accurate results, incredibly fast. Once the mould has been made, there is very little labour required too. This means it is a fast and reliable manufacturing process – with little cost required in comparison to its production scale.

Plastic is one of the most versatile and reliable materials on the planet, which is why injection moulded plastics are continually on the rise. It’s available in thousands of different forms and is used worldwide for a wide range of applications. Whether it’s for furnishing, building, entertainment purposes, or communication, the list of plastic uses is ever-expanding.

Here at Moldwel, we’re proud to be one of the country’s leading plastic injection moulding companies. With so many different uses for plastic, there is also a lot of ways to manufacture with it. Plastic injection moulding is one of the most popular manufacturing processes.

Plastic vs Metal: The Advantages of Plastics

The cost of ‘Raw Material’ in plastics is considerably less than metal – also production using plastic is far less labour intensive which gives clear savings in energy, wages costs and production time.

Plastic weighs considerably less than metal ( despite retaining similar strength properties ) giving savings in component costs and also transport costs.

It does not corrode or rust as metal does.

Plastic components can be manufactured in any specific or matched colour – metal cannot – metal has to be painted or coated as a secondary operation, increasing production time and cost.

The material can be manufactured easily in any design, shape or texture irrespective of complexity – metal cannot.

Plastic injection moulding is far more efficient and cost effective, quicker and produces less scrap and wastage compared to metal.

There are hundreds of different grades of plastics available all with different properties, strengths etc – metal is far more limited with its options.

Over the years, the plastic product manufacturing industry has been prime topic of conversation worldwide. Social media displays pictures on a weekly basis of beaching and oceans full of discarded plastic cups and bottles and the impact they are having on the environment. However, there is still a need for plastic products throughout the globe. That’s where UK plastic product manufacturers such as ourselves come in – striving to produce eco friendly products using an environmentally friendly process.

In this article we will discuss the dangers of single use plastics and how multi use plastics are the best choice for plastic product manufacturing.

The UK’s Environmental Plan

The UK Government have set goals to improve our environmental record. The 25 Year Environment Plan sets out to safeguard endangered species, offer better habitats for wildlife, and deliver cleaner air and water in our cities and rural areas.

Current published and widely available figures from the BPF (British Plastics Federation) claim that “Recycling rates in the UK have come a long way in recent years and continue to grow year on year. For example, in the year 2000 only 13,000 tonnes of plastic bottles were recycled; the UK now collected for recycling 390,000 tonnes of plastic bottles a year”.

Almost all types of plastic can be recycled and re-used in a variety of different sectors and applications. However, it depends on many factors. For instance, it can depend on economic and logistical factors as well as technical issues and obviously financial factors and constraints.

Within plastics used in everyday life there are two main types seen – single use and multi / continual use.

The Dangers of Single Use Plastics

Single use plastics are those which are causing most concern and indeed damage to the environment. Things such as carrier bags, plastic bottles, drinks cups – throwaway items. Once they have been used and served their purpose, they are no longer able to be repurposed of recycled. Broadly speaking you would class these items as packaging items.

Most councils offer recycling options for these. Whether it be your weekly / bi-weekly home collections of such items, or when you are out and about. Different waste bins are seen with options to separate types of waste – plastic bottles into one bin, cans into another and so on. Therefore, this helps keep waste out of the environment, and in doing so protecting our wildlife.

Since the government introduced a 5p levy charge on plastic bags in 2015 (which then doubled to 10p in 2021), statistics show that the purchase of single use of carrier bags within the UK decreased by 95% in major supermarkets. You will also have seen in many of the high street coffee shop incentives, to either bring your own cup or have a reusable cup. All of which are aimed at further reducing waste and impact on the environment.

Multi Use Plastics

The manufacture of multi-use plastic products is what we do here at Moldwel. These are products that are found and used regularly in every day life. Such as, car parts, televisions, light fittings to name but a few – these are all designed and manufactured to last many many years.

Eco Friendly Plastic Product Manufacturers in the UK

Most of these items are made out of plastic that can be recycled and re-used over. Again lessoning the impact on the environment. As product manufacturers in the UK who endeavour to be eco friendly throughout our process, we use plastics that are derived from natural, organic products, such as coal and crude oil. Crude oil is a complex mixture of thousands of different compounds. To become useable and workable it has to be processed down. So, the use of recycled plastic avoids depleting any further the natural assets of the planet. This then gives us a sustainable and renewable source for new materials and therefore reduces the impact on the environment.

The government has over the past couple of years introduced a number of heavily incentivised schemes to promote and encourages recycling and re-use of “multi-use” plastics. The most common one which received the most publicity is in relation to End of Life Vehicles.

Overview of Regulations: end-of-life vehicles (ELVs)

“Vehicles are regulated to limit the environmental impact of their disposal, by reducing the amount of waste created when they are scrapped. This is done through various measures to encourage the recovery, reuse and recycling of metals, plastics and rubber.”

As a result, more and more recycled plastics are being used in the manufacture of multi-use plastics.

There is clearly an issue with waste plastics having a negative impact upon the environment. However, within the industry itself we are all working hard to reduce this. We are utilising new, more efficient methods of manufacturing plastic products, using where ever possible recycled materials and reducing scrap and waste.

Plastic Injection Moulding Explained

What is plastic injection moulding?

Plastic injection moulding is a type of manufacturing technique that is commonly used to produce batches of the same plastic product. The process is incredibly simple and produces effective results, making it the go-to technique for many different manufacturing industries.

What plastics are used?

Plastic injection moulding uses thermoplastics such as ABS, Polypropylene and Polycarbonate to make products from as the materials are all incredibly easy to bend, mould and shape whilst still retaining their durability and toughness.

What is the process?

Injection moulding involves pouring heated granules of thermoplastic (in a full liquid form) into a pre-made mould. The mould will made into the desired product shape. In addition, will contain all the correct bends and cavities for the liquid plastic to be poured into. Once the mould is full of the melted plastic, it is then left to cool until it solidifies.

Once the plastic in the mould has set, the new hardened product will be taken out the mould. As a result, leaving you with the desired plastic component that is ready to undergo any necessary finishing processes.

The Advantages of Plastic Injection Moulding

Plastic injection moulding is a very popular type of manufacturing technique due to the many advantages it can offer. The process is very simple and offers a fast turnaround. This means you can always rely on it to offer results on time – even if your requirements are last minute.

Due to the simplicity of plastic injection moulding services, there are also very little labour costs involved. Therefore, the process can also be quite economical. This leaves you with plenty of scope to make profit on your manufactured products.

Injection moulding is very reliable. It always performs well, and provides consistent results. With this in mind, the process is ideal for those looking to produce small or large scale batches of same-sized products.

When choosing the right production method for your plastic products, it can be hard to decide what is the best for you application. Moreover, there are many advantages of injection moulding, so, we wanted to give you an overview at what these are. At Moldwel we provide fast and efficient plastic injection moulding services for all industries, from design to delivery.

When choosing to work with us for your plastic moulding process we can guarantee:

1 – Its Accurate ;

Plastic Injection Moulding is such a precise method of manufacturing that almost any type of component can be made in this way. There are certain design restrictions, where other methods such as blow moulding or Vac Forming may be a better option. But the moulds that are made allow the finished injection moulded product to be extremely accurate and precise, more so than in any other field of manufacture.

Related: Injection Moulding vs Vacuum Forming
Related: Blow Moulding Plastic Vs. Injection Moulding

2 – Its Fast ;

There is a simple reason why plastic injection moulding is considered the most common technology for high quantities and volumes and long production runs – its very fast and efficient. While actual cycle times depends on the size of the component, the size of the tool and the tonnage of moulding machine used, cycle times can be as quick as 6-8 seconds per shot.

3 – Low Cost ;

After initial tool manufacture, running costs are very low compared to other methods of manufacture, most jobs can run “fully automatic” without an operator and with minimal supervision required.

4 – Recyclable / Environmentally Friendly ;

Despite all of the “bad press” about plastics, Injection Moulding is one of the most environmentally friendly methods of manufacture available. All modern injection moulding machines are incredibly efficient and power resourceful. The actual process itself ensures only the required amount of plastic is used – there is no waste in the production process itself and any “scrap” or “rejected” parts can be granulated and re-used in the production process.

5 – Flexibility ;

Aside from the environmental efficiency, Injection Moulding is also very flexible – parts can be made out of a variety of different materials depending on their end use and can be manufactured in any colour required – therefore you can have what you want – any material, any specific requirement ( strength, flexibility, Heat Resistant etc ) in any colour you want.

The Plastic Injection Moulding Process

Plastic injection moulding is a type of manufacturing technique that is used to produce plastic products and components. Widely used across a huge range of manufacturing industries, the process creates batches of the same sized product fast and effectively.

To begin with, a formable plastic (a thermoplastic) such as ABS, polycarbonate or polypropylene is melted into liquid form. Once fully melted, the plastic is then poured into a mould that has been specifically made into the shape of the required product – for example a cookware handle.

Once the plastic has filled the mould and all its cavities, it is then left to cool and harden. The final result is a plastic component that is ready to undertake any relevant finishing processes.

Why Use Plastic Injection Moulding?

Plastic injection moulding is popular because of its simplicity and cost efficiency. The process is fairly non-complicated and requires little labour to create the products. This means that it is one of the most cost-efficient plastic manufacturing processes available. Also, its versatility means it can be used across a whole host of different industries and applications. Although it is a simple process to execute, our plastic injection moulders will always be on-hand to ensure products remain identical and faultless.
